Changes to the 2.5-day PITstop advanced diabetes course accreditation

Posted on

We have decided to change the way the 2.5-day PITstop advanced course (PITstop) is accredited, moving away from University Accreditation and applying for RCGP accreditation to ensure we continue to meet the high standard we strive to maintain. At present PITstop is credit rated with Greenwich University (15 credits at level 5). To obtain the additional 15 credits, students have 12 months from day 1 of their course, to submit a completed competency document (signed by a local assessor) and a 1500-word reflective report about one of their insulin or GLP-1 Agonist initiations. In a cohort of 24, on average, 2-3 students choose to submit.

We have concluded that the University Accreditation does not meet the needs of the majority of our students and we have decided to move back to RCGP accreditation which requires a rigorous annual application where every resource and our internal quality assurance processes are checked by their diabetes clinical lead. We plan to keep the PITstop competency tool and encourage students to work with a local mentor to complete the tool and submit it to their PCN or ICB diabetes lead / commissioner. This will help diabetes services understand which clinicians have actively worked to embed the skills in GLP-1 Agonist and insulin initiation after attending the advanced PITstop course.

There is a cost saving because we will no longer be managing the administration and marking of students University submissions. We have passed the cost saving onto our customers for commissioned courses and have maintained the individual registration fee at the 2022/23 price of £564.

The change will take place from 1st April 2024.

For PITstop students attednign the course before 31st March 2024
Any students whose first day of the course starts before 31st March 2024 will have the opportunity to complete the university accreditation. You are given one year to complete the university accreditation so the final applications will be submitted in March 2025. We will not be able to give any extensions after this time.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss the course further, please contact the PITstop team on admin@pitstopdiabetes.co.uk
