2-day PITstop Type 1 diabetes pump therapy course

This is a 2-day insulin pump therapy course for Diabetes Specialist Nurses (DSNs) and dietitians (who need to know the practicalities of insulin pump therapy) that will cover the basics of insulin pump therapy and the follow up of these patients. The course will provide an insight into hybrid closed loop and reviewing the downloaded data. There will be practical and theoretical elements to the 2 days.

Course aims

  • Day 1 – to provide you with the knowledge to start the right treatment at the right time to the right patient
  • Day 2 – develop your clinical skills to follow up and support a patient on an insulin pump with and without CGM/HCL

Learning outcomes

Day 1

  • Know what diabetes technology is available
  • What the criteria is for access to this technology (NICE TA 943)
  • How to prepare a patient for pump therapy
  • Understand the pump settings, doses to use and how to programme the pump
  • Have a basic knowledge of the use of an insulin pump

Day 2 

  • Have a basic understanding of data interpretation
  • Insulin pumps
  • Hybrid closed loop
  • Have a basic understanding of a hybrid closed loop system and which they are
  • Basic knowledge of how they compare with any licence restrictions
  • Insulin pumps in special circumstances
  • Know where to find support information

Preparation for pump therapy. What is pump therapy?
Selection for pumps
On-boarding of patients
Hypoglycaemia and Hyperglycaemia management
Practical time with pump company representatives – Medtronic, Yposmed, Insulet (Omnipod) and AirLiquide (T-Slim).

Accreditation
The course is accredited with the RCN and equates to 14 hours of learning. You will receive a certificate of attendance for attending the full course.

Criteria to apply

  • Clinicians in the role of a DSN or Diabetes Specialist Dietician actively seeing people with Type 1 diabetes in their clinics
  • Available to attend the full 2-day course
